Ocean Modeling — Research
AEF designs, builds and
applies a variety of state-of-the-art ocean models to serve our
client's needs such as:
- Exploration of the fundamental physical processes
governing oceanic flows
- Forecasts from our coupled air-sea modeling
systems
- Hindcasts using the latest data assimilation
techniques
AEF has the technology
to meet our client's needs and the expertise to help you apply it
in a variety of settings.
Movable-Nested-Grid
Primitive-Equation Model
The flagship of the
AEF ocean modeling suite is the movable-nested-grid primitive-equation
model. While there are other models with nested-grid capabilities,
only our embedded high-resolution-grids track features of interest
during model integration. This unique technology permits high-resolution
simulation of eddies, oil spills, plankton blooms, and other
features advected by currents within the context of realistic
larger scale ocean circulation without enormous computational
burden.

AEF also
has extensive experience with other kinds of ocean modeling systems
including:
-
Intermediate equation
models that are ideal for analyzing the physics of current
evolution. These models extend the basic quasi-geostrophic
framework in ways that permit the study of problems with
arbitrary bathymetry and large layer interface perturbations.
-
Data assimilating
models that combine observations and model predictions
to optimally predict the actual state of the ocean.
-
Coupled systems that
combine state-of-the-art models in both forecast and analysis
systems.
The AEF Tropical Cyclone
Prediction System currently employs a coupled atmosphere-ocean
model. We also couple ocean wave models, coastal flood models,
and insured loss estimation models with our ocean and atmosphere
models in order to meet our client's needs. If you would like
